Flying Drones in Canada

With new laws, sorry, Rules coming into effect in Canada on June 1st 2019 Transportation Canada has updated their website with more confusing information.

I've tried my best to put all of the relative information into one page in step-by-step format. PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE TO CORRECTLY REGISTER AND CERTIFY YOURSELF, THE FOLLOWING IS ONLY MY INTERPRETATION OF THE RESPECTIVE WEBSITES

Canada is strict with drones, but are pretty bad at making anything simple.

Before we continue, weigh your drone (Including any batteries and cameras) and get the weight in KG. If your drone is below 250 GRAMS then don't bother, anything over that then read the below.

For example, my drone weighs 15.8LBS, which turns to 7.167KGs, which I would round up to 18KGs to keep it simple.


You now need to know what you are going to be doing with your drone.

  • Flying for hobby, for fun, and 30m (100ft) away from bystanders?
  • Do this exam.
